Any support for AJAX or plans for the near future? I'd like to be able to intercept drawing the subs and download then next couple of tiers from the server for a large menu.

Not in next few months. However, having large menu structure compromises usability greatly: one accidental mouseout, and you have to dig levels again. Tree suits the scenario much better.
