Two lines of item captions

I am using Version: 2.8.7a on XP. I would like to have two lines of item caption, but using either </br> or table as proposed does not solve the problem.
I have a span tag around the caption, but even if I delete that tag </br> and table does not work,
I could use text wrapping, but then I cannot control how the captions are wrapped.
Any solutions to that problem ?

Try to use <br /> instead of </br>.
